History of Car
Current owner, Eric Platt, Cheshire, UK. Car number YB1281 came off the production line at Abingdon on the 14th April 1953. The car was registered FDY788 on the 18th May 1953 in Hastings and nothing is known of its early history till 1974 when a Mr Verrill of Newcastle on Tyne is recorded as its keeper. The next registered keeper is listed as “Saloon Car Club” with an address in Telford, Shropshire. It was acquired by them on the 1st May 1987 and after four years it was disposed on the 24th June 1991 to Vic Jones of Uffington, Shrewsbury, thought to be a dealer as he was not recorded as a registered keeper.
Mr S. Challinor of Wrexham became the next registered keeper on the 3rd March 1992. He apparently purchased three Y types, including FDY788 at the same time, from a man in Oswestry (dealer?), with the intention of “doing them up” and using them as a fleet of wedding cars. He never got round to this, however after two or three years he sold two of the cars to “an Irishman”. He kept FDY788 because it was the best one of the three, with a reliable engine. In September 2000 the car plus parts were included in the sale of the car to Mr Robert Hall of Sandbach, Cheshire. Mr Hall undertook considerable body restoration including the new sills and refurbishment of some of the panels, notably the boot lid and the floor of the spare wheel compartment.
On the 7th January 2003 the car was sold to Mr John Bryce, Lincolnshire. He bought the car for his wife to drive, after doing considerable work to the car it was all to no avail as Mrs Bryce did not take to the car. On the 21st July 2003 Mr John Crossland of Sturton by Stow, Lincoln became the cars next registered keeper when he bought the car on the 21st July 2003. His main work on the car was a rebuild of the front suspension. On the 5th May 2007 Mr Eric Platt of Macclesfield, Cheshire became the present registered owner of FDY788.
