Spring Run May 2022 Report and Photos

The weekend of 13^th – 14^th May saw the welcome return of the Y Register Spring Run, our first since 2019.The relief that, after all, things were almost back to normal, was palpable. The chance to see and have a meal with old friends, to bore each other silly with microscopic automotive trivia, was a joy. Of now the car stuff is interspersed granny and grandad gloating, an equal joy.

We met on Saturday at Middle Aston Hall, in a beautiful Oxfordshire landscape. At the AGM Maggie Grafham stood down as Chairperson and Chris Callaghan was elected as the new one. Treasurer and Secretary remained the same.

We all enjoyed a splendid dinner. Annette Callaghan had thoughtfully, as usual, printed our meal choices on our place cards, preventing the wracking of brains sometimes required on these occasions.

Award was given at the dinner for the ‘Car of the Year’ (the car which has seen the most use) to Alan Chick for his continuing use of the car passed to him by his uncle of the same name. He has named it hector and features him on Facebook in his quest for the perfect ice cream.

On The morning of Sunday 14^th there were 22 Y Types and 1 TD in the car park and we held our usual ‘Car I’d most like to take home’ contest. The awards went to; YA Bill Taylor; YB Keith Powell; YT Mike Brown.

We set off through a splendid banner arch provided by Peter Vielvoye, commemorating the 75^th Anniversary of the ‘’MG One and a Quarter Litre Sports Saloon’’, Y Type to its friends. Each participant paused briefly beneath the banner for a ceremonial photograph before setting off on Annette and Chris Callaghan’s route to the British Motor Museum at Gaydon in Warwickshire.

The weather for the run was typical of this year’s spring where we’ve had one day on one day off. Sunday was an off day and the rain bucketed down. I was happy to find that my YB’s wipers worked and the window didn’t leak. Not so lucky was Roy Clapham in his newly completed, utterly unique ‘MG YA Tourer’. He has added every detail to it, except a roof.

Gaydon had provided us with an exclusive parking spot and the museum was enjoyed by all, especially those who hadn’t visited it before. We said goodbye until September, when we visit Jersey.

The MG Y Type left to the MGCC by Tim Pennicott, and called ‘Little Gem’ by Suzy Arnott, was bought by Paul and Maggie Grafham when the club decided to sell it. As she described in last month’s newsletter it was used by them on their honeymoon. They have now given it to their 10-year-old grandson George. George was on the Spring Run with his father and his sister Daisy. The photograph shows him posing with Little Gem beneath the 75^th Anniversary banner at the start of the run.
