Just for interest, the photograph was taken on the way home from our first event, the Anglia Centre’s Mid-Summer Run. The display in the background is the Thetford Forest Memorial to the Desert Rats and is a replica of Mark IV Cromwell Tank, “Little Audrey”, B Squadron, 1st Royal Tank Regiment. After our travels on the Mid-Summer run we have built sufficient confidence in the car to decide to travel to Ripon for the Ripon Old Car Show. I gather that draws quite a few Ys. We also hope to attend the Y Register Autumn Run in September.
History of Car
Built in 1949 and first registered Jan 1950 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire where it remained until 2009. The current registration is, I understand, a Derbyshire number and is the number assigned to the car on first registration. During its time in Chesterfield it had six or possibly seven owners. At some stage it had been re-sprayed green but during a fairly extensive renovation between 1997 and about 2002 the car was returned to its original Sun Bronze colour. In 2009 it was sold to a dealer in Warwickshire and from there moved to South Wales; there it remained until August 2010 when I acquired the car.
The recorded mileage is just under 90,000 miles (June 2011). I believe that this reading is fairly accurate as I have MOT certificates back to 1983 which would tend to support the values. Between 1983 and 2001 the mileage increased by only 76 miles which would tend to indicate that the car had been off the road for a lengthy period of time.

Registrars Notes.
Y 5748. Quite a rare car, being L. H. drive. The Y Register only has records of 11 other saloons that are currently listed as ‘live’.

Picture details
The photo is of Jacks car in 1994 leaving the site of the old MG factory. This is now a car park behind the police headquarters in Abingdon.
The building in the distance is the Car Company offices and it is believed that the large window was once John Thornley’s office.
History of Car
I purchased the car from a lockup near Guildford in September 1986. The car was in a very sorry state and had to be dragged from the garage as the brakes had seized. Work began on its restoration almost immediately, with copious photographs being taken to assist with the eventual rebuild. The rebuild was a complete body off restoration taking a total of six years, where many body panels were rebuilt and the mechanics renewed or overhauled. I hope to include a photographic record and more detailed account of the whole rebuild on this site when time permits.

Notes by the Owner.
“I purchased NKK 472 in July 2011. The car was fully restored in 1989, and does not appear to have been used very much since. This may account for the difficulties that I quickly experienced which has resulted in a new fuel tank, new carburettor and new fuel pump having to be fitted. I have also added electronic ignition, flashing indicators and an FT 57 fog lamp.”

Owners and Location.
John & Sue Turner, Turners Beach, Tasmania.
Date of First Registration.
1951.
History of Car.
First registered in Victoria, Australia, early history unknown. Restored sometime in the last 15-20 years by previous owner of about 25 years in Melbourne. Appears to have been well cared for all it’s life.
Modifications & points of Interest.
Spin-on oil filter now fitted (had MG YB filter on previously) and currently working on adding tubular shocks to rear.
We also own an original condition 1925 Willys Knight 65 tourer [4 cylinder sleeve valve] since 1986, making a big contrast to the sleek glossy appearance of the Y.

History of Car.
Y6641 was exported to Southern Ireland in early 1951 as a CKD (Completely Knocked Down) car for assembly in Ireland. The car has been off the road for many years stored in a barn. The Irish vehicle registration authorities have some knowledge of ZE 9231 in the archives but no history.
Owners Notes.
After trailering the car back from Ireland in January 2010 I began stripping the car for a full body off restoration . The body tub was removed from the chassis and the chassis stripped back to bare metal , treated and painted in twin pack epoxy chassis paint. The suspension, steering and braking system was all overhauled, new springs reconditioned shocks and poly bushes fitted to the suspension. I rebuilt the engine and fitted a 5 speed Ford Type 9 gearbox to the rolling chassis before moving it to one side to start on the body.
After completely stripping the body and panels back to the steel I carried out various weld repairs over many months before having the body ready for paint.. Once painted the body was reunited with its chassis and I began work on the interior . I fitted a new roof lining with the help from Jack Murry’s wonderful instruction sheet and had the seats and door panels recovered. All the wood was re-veneered, chrome work re-chromed and the car was getting ready for the road.
During the course of the rebuild I carried out various modifications such as changing the wiring to negative earth and fitting an additional fuse box separating the circuits with individual fuses for better protection. I also fitted a remote servo to the braking system to give additional braking assistance.
After re registering the car in the UK I was issued with an age related registration and my YA finally made its first trip on UK roads since it left the factory in boxes to Ireland in 1951. Its first outing was to the 2012 Ripon show to meet up with many other Y types at the Northern Y register meeting.
Interesting facts
Y6641 has the chassis no. stamped in the correct position on the chassis but does NOT have a Y stamped adjacent to the number.
Being an Irish car all the window glass has a shamrock etched into it near the manufacturers logo.
